I’ve adapted the words from Kerri ní Dochartaigh’s remarkable memoir/nature book, Thin Places in this original song. She portrays an Ireland in which the boundary between the natural and supernatural is often permeable, and in winter solstice, especially so. It opens with an Irish Traditional Music Archive’s recording of six girls from Magilligan in 1969, who sing the beguiling rhyme: ‘A little thing goes wandering about/behind her backs and under her tracks/see I have got it/see I have got it/Tra la la la…’
