A traditional Appalachian murder ballad with its roots in the Irish song ‘The Wexford Girl’ and the English equivalent, ‘The Oxford Girl.’ It inspired Nick Cave to write ‘Where The Wild Roses Grow,’ his duet with Kylie Minogue. There are enough songs about men killing women, so I made my protagonist female.
