about

The poet Robin Robertson (also the editor of my novel Swansong) reads ‘Inversnaid’ by Gerard Manley Hopkins.

The field recordings are all made by the three girls who made up the primary school on Fair Isle (Britain’s most remote community) on a project I did in 2016 with them. Saskia Ventrillon (aged 8), Grace Parnaby (aged 7) and Freyja Parnaby (aged 4) recorded the sounds of the island, including its fresh water.

Molly and Imogen Snow (aged 9 and 6) sing the first verse of ‘Flow Gently, Sweet Afton,’ a traditional tune with words by Robert Burns.
