about

This enigmatic song has lost some important narrative components on its travels, but likely has its roots in the myth of Ondine, in which a water sprite falls in love with a mortal man, who deceives her by getting engaged to an earthly woman. Here, the sprite kills him with a poisoned kiss and George’s betrothed, and indeed five other young ladies, are so traumatised by his end that they all die too.

I learnt this from the Shirley Collins version.
